From enquiry to first session

From your enquiry to your child's first Economics session

1

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you enquire, Joe calls you back to fix a time that suits you. The consultation is a proper forty-minute conversation about your child's Economics, the exam board, the predicted grade and where the marks are slipping, whether that's the analysis, the diagrams or the 25-mark essays. From there he starts thinking about which tutors would fit.

2

Free trial calls with two or three tutor matches

Joe sends a shortlist of two or three tutors he believes could work for your child, and each one offers a free trial call. You meet them, watch how they talk through a data-response question, and see who your child actually clicks with. No commitment afterwards, no card details and no awkward pressure.

3

You pick the tutor that fits, and sessions begin

From the trial calls you choose the tutor who feels right, and weekly sessions start on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard where diagrams get drawn and marked in real time. You pay per session. No contracts. If at any point it isn't working, you stop.

We have met every tutor we put in front of you

The hardest part of finding an Economics tutor is usually the not knowing, a name off a directory, a profile that says 'Economics graduate' and little else. We changed that part. Harry and Joe have personally interviewed every tutor on the platform, and roughly thirty-three people apply for each one we say yes to. So by the time a name reaches you, it has already been through two people who know the difference between a tutor who can explain a market and a tutor who can teach a student to evaluate one.

02

Your child's board and paper, not just 'Economics'

AQA, Edexcel A, Edexcel B and OCR look like the same subject and they are not. The essay questions carry different mark weightings, the data-response sections are set differently, and the top of each mark scheme rewards evaluation in its own way. If your child is taught on one board and tutored on another, the marks tend to suffer for it. Not sure which board your child sits? Joe will work that out with you on the first call.

03

We start by listening, not selling

Most parents who reach us can't name exactly what's going wrong, only that the effort is going in and the grade won't move. That's what the 40-minute consultation with Joe is for. A proper conversation about the predicted grade, the essay that came back a C, and whether the problem is the diagrams, the chains of analysis or the evaluation that never quite arrives. From there he puts together a small shortlist of tutors who can do something about it.

Who runs The Degree Gap

Meet Harry and Joe

We're Harry and Joe, the two co-founders of The Degree Gap. We both sat A-Level Economics ourselves, and Harry went on to read Economics at the LSE, so this is a subject we know from the inside. We know the exact moment a diagram stops being decoration and starts earning marks. And we know why a page of neat, correct analysis still comes back a grade lower than it should, because nobody taught the student to evaluate. That gap, between knowing the content and writing it the way an examiner rewards, is the thing we match tutors for. Between us we've got over five thousand hours of one-to-one teaching and strong views about what actually moves an Economics grade.

Things A-Level Economics parents ask us

How do I know if my child needs an A-Level Economics tutor?

The clearest sign is when the content is going in but the marks won't follow. Your child can explain the theory at home, then the essay comes back a grade lower than expected. Diagrams losing marks they shouldn't. Data-response answers that describe when they should be evaluating. Any of those is a good reason to get in touch. We will tell you honestly on the call if we do not think tutoring is the right move.

My child understands the content but the grade is stuck. What is going on?

This is the most common thing we hear on A-Level Economics. Usually it isn't a knowledge problem at all. It's the evaluation, AO4 on the mark scheme, and the precision of the diagrams. A page of correct analysis still lands mid-band if it never weighs up, prioritises or challenges the argument. The good news is that's a teachable skill, and it's most of what a tutor works on.

Which exam boards do your A-Level Economics tutors cover?

AQA, Edexcel A, Edexcel B and OCR. When we match a tutor, the board is part of the criteria, not an afterthought. The essays and the data-response sections are set differently across the four, and the top of each mark scheme rewards evaluation in its own way. If you are not sure which board your child sits, Joe will work it out on the first call.

Do you tutor A-Level Economics online or in person?

Every session runs on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. The tutor can draw and label a diagram, mark a 25-mark essay on screen and walk your child through it line by line. Most students concentrate better one-to-one online than they do in a class of thirty. We do not do in-person.

My child picked Economics late or is starting from scratch. Can you help?

Yes, and it's more common than you'd think. Plenty of students come to Economics fresh in Year 12 with no GCSE in it. We start with a diagnostic to see what's solid and what isn't, then build the foundations properly: the core diagrams, the way analysis chains together, the exam language. Nobody gets thrown into 25-mark essays before they're ready.

Is the consultation and the trial calls really free?

Yes. The 40-minute consultation with Joe is free. The trial calls with the tutors he suggests are free. You only start paying once you have chosen a tutor and weekly sessions begin. No catch, no card details up front.
