Edexcel GCSE Biology Tutors Who Teach the 1BI0 Spec

Edexcel likes to drop students into an organism or a dataset they have never seen and ask them to reason from it. We match you with a tutor who teaches your child to work from what the question actually gives them.

How it is examined

How Edexcel GCSE Biology is actually assessed

Two written papers from Pearson Edexcel, an hour and forty-five minutes each, 100 marks apiece and worth half the grade each. No coursework. What sets Edexcel apart is not the content, it is the way the questions arrive, often wrapped around an unfamiliar context or a set of data. Here is how it breaks down.

Paper 1 (1BI0/1F or /1H)

One hour forty-five, 100 marks, half the grade. Covers Topics 1 to 5: key concepts in biology, cells and control, genetics, natural selection and genetic modification, and health, disease and the development of medicines.

Paper 2 (1BI0/2F or /2H)

Same length and marks, sat separately. This paper is Topics 6 to 9: plant structures, animal coordination and homeostasis, exchange and transport, and ecosystems and material cycles. Topic 1, key concepts, is fair game on both papers.

The core practicals

Edexcel calls them core practicals, and they come back as written questions on method, variables and results. Osmosis, microscopy, the food tests, the rate of photosynthesis and quadrat sampling are the ones students most often meet in the exam.

Application and data questions

This is the Edexcel signature. Questions hand your child an organism, an experiment or a dataset they have never seen and ask them to apply what they know. The facts alone do not carry it, the reasoning does.

Where the marks are

What an Edexcel GCSE Biology tutor drills

01

Reasoning from an unfamiliar context

Edexcel loves to set a question around a plant, an animal or a study your child has never covered. Panic makes them reach for a memorised answer that does not fit. A tutor teaches them to read what the question gives, pull the relevant biology and reason forward from there.

02

The data and maths questions

Graphs, tables, percentages and rates run right through both papers. Tutors drill reading data accurately, describing a trend in the right words and doing the calculation the question is fishing for, so the analysis marks stop slipping away.

03

Core practicals across both papers

The core practicals surface as exam questions, and Topic 1 key concepts can appear on either paper. A tutor rehearses the method-and-results questions and keeps the foundational topics sharp, so nothing gets quietly dropped between Paper 1 and Paper 2.

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you enquire, co-founder Joe calls you back to fix a time that suits you. It is a proper conversation about your child's Biology, the exam board, the predicted grade and the topics the class raced past. From there he starts working out which tutors would actually fit.

02

Free trial calls with two or three matches

Joe sends a shortlist of two or three tutors, and each one offers a free trial call. You meet them, watch how they talk through a Biology question, and see who your child clicks with. No commitment, no card details, no pressure afterwards.

You choose, and sessions begin

You pick the tutor that fits and weekly sessions start on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. You pay per session, there are no contracts, and if at any point it is not working, you stop.

What Degree Gap families say

Real reviews from Degree Gap families, all verified on Google. None are Edexcel-specific, and we would not dress them up as such. We chose the ones that speak to what GCSE Biology families actually come to us for: the content that will not stick, the technique underneath it, and a grade that finally starts to move.

★★★★★

The Degree Gap has exceeded all my expectations. They have gone above and beyond to pair both my sons with the appropriate tutors, all of whom have been exceptional. Both my sons exceeded their expected grades in their GCSEs and A Levels and got into their first choice universities. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Edexcel GCSE Biology questions parents ask

How is Edexcel GCSE Biology examined?

Two written papers from Pearson Edexcel, an hour and forty-five minutes each, 100 marks apiece and worth half the grade each. Paper 1 covers Topics 1 to 5 and Paper 2 covers Topics 6 to 9, with the key concepts in Topic 1 able to appear on either. There is no coursework.

Why does my child freeze on Edexcel's unfamiliar-context questions?

Because Edexcel deliberately sets questions around an organism, experiment or dataset your child has never studied, and the instinct is to hunt for a memorised answer that does not fit. A tutor teaches the opposite habit, reading what the question actually provides and reasoning from it, which is the whole skill Edexcel is testing.

Edexcel keeps asking data and graph questions. Can a tutor help with those?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons Edexcel families come to us. Tutors work through describing trends precisely, doing the percentage, ratio and rate calculations, and saying something real about a graph rather than restating it. It is a technique, and it is very teachable.

Do your tutors cover Edexcel's core practicals?

Yes. Edexcel examines the core practicals in the written papers, so knowing them matters as much as any topic. Tutors go through osmosis, microscopy, the food tests, the rate of photosynthesis and quadrat sampling, and teach your child to answer on method, variables and results rather than just recall the experiment.

Foundation or Higher on Edexcel, and does it change the tutoring?

Edexcel runs two tiers. Foundation covers grades 1 to 5 and Higher covers grades 4 to 9, and the school normally decides which your child sits. It shapes the work, since Higher pushes harder on the application questions and the maths, so we match your child with a tutor who knows the tier they are actually entered for.

Do you teach Edexcel Biology in person or online?

Every session runs online through Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard. A tutor can mark a past paper on screen, sketch a diagram and talk your child through a data question line by line. Most students concentrate better one-to-one online than in a full class. We do not do in-person.
